What to expect
Travelling through the dusty Kalahari Desert, on a 5 day trip of a lifetime, is the best way to see all that this incredible destination has to offer.

When travelling here, you will see two very different worlds. The first is the Mariental, which is situated in the south-central part of Namibia and the second is the Fish River Canyon, a spectacular yet desolate place, with little to no plant and animal life. The Fish River Canyon is rocky and magnificent, a place of absolute beauty and the ideal place to go hiking.
Travelling the Kalahari is not for the fainthearted, but it is one place that you will never forget venturing to. Bring along your camera and your sense of adventure and get ready for a trip that will have you falling in love with Africa all over again.

Welcome to the spectacular desert nation of Namibia!
Day 1 starts with our arrival at Windhoek International Airport, and from here you will need to exchange some money and buy an MTC telephone card. Once the admin is out of the way, you will start the trip being transferred to the Zebra Kalahari Lodge, which you will arrive at, at around 13:00. The trip is about 250km away, and the journey takes some 3 hours.
Once you arrive at the lodge, you will have time to get settled in and enjoy a sundowner.
After some relaxation and a relaxing sundowner, you will embark on your first safari. This late afternoon game drive is done in the company of an experienced guide who knows the area extremely well, and will tell you will about the flora and fauna. The tour is done in an open jeep.
The afternoon drive is an ideal time to reflect on the day’s journey and to really be present in what is happening around you. The Namibian countryside is overwhelming in beauty, and is without doubt a magical place to be visiting.
The afternoon drive will take you into the Kalahari Desert Dunes, where you can get comfortable and watch the most spectacular sunset you are likely to ever have seen. When the sun sets over the red sands, the whole atmosphere changes and the landscape takes on the deepest of red hues. This is considered to be the most beautiful time of day.
When guests are ready, and the sun is almost completely set, you will be brought back to the lodge where you can tuck into a delicious dinner before settling in for the night.
The Kalahari Desert is one of the most unique places in Africa. Its reaches extend from South Africa, into Namibia and across to Botswana. The name “Kalahari” means “the great thirst” and it is not actually a desert in the official sense of the word. The Kalahari is a living desert and receives more rainfall than the other deserts of the world. The landscape is semi-arid and part of it is sandy savannah, which is covered in grass. The Kalahari is home to the San people, and is their last official, traditional home. The San people live a life that is very much like that which their ancestors lived.
In the Namibian part of the Kalahari Desert, a place where much of this tour takes place, the sands are red and covered in a layer of stunning golden grass. In this part of the desert, you could come across jackals, impala, cheetah, and gemsbok.

Mariental to Fish River Canyon
The second day of the tour begins with a full breakfast, after which you will be transferred to the Fish River Lodge. Once you arrive at the lodge you will be checked-in and have some time to enjoy some relaxation. After lunch, you will embark on another sundowner afternoon drive.
On this afternoon, you will be taken on a trip along the plateau. There are two different viewpoints, which look out over the Fish River Canyon, and each offer breath taking views of the canyon below. As with the previous day, your tour will be conducted by an experienced guide who will tell you all about the flora and fauna, as well as the geology that makes the area so special. Before we head back to the lodge, we will stop again for you to get one last look at the canyon. Drinks and snacks are served.
The Fish River Canyon is a spectacular attraction and one that attracts guests from all over the world. It is a rocky place, with very few animals and plant life, but despite this lack of life, it is a mesmerising place. The Fish River Canyon is Africa’s biggest canyon and it is also the second largest canyon on the planet after the Grand Canyon. The canyon is hot and dry and it runs 160km in length and is around 27km from one side to the other. It also plunges some 550meters to the canyon floor. The canyon is a geological wonder and it is a place of adventure! There is an 85km hiking trail that takes hikers through a 1.5 billion year geological history. For those not keen on hiking, the Fish River Canyon is simply a beautiful place to just relax. At the southern end of the canyon, there are a number of hot springs called the Ai-Ais and all along the canyon, there are numerous viewpoints to enjoy. Some of the activities that you can enjoy at the canyon include horseback riding, scenic flights, kayaking (in season), and numerous nature drives.

At around midday, you will return to the lodge for lunch.
This is the ideal day to indulge in some relaxation. Instead of rushing to the next destination of thing to do, on this day you can simply take in the beauty of the surroundings, from the comfort of your terrace, or you can gym, go to the sauna, or book a wellness treatment, although such treatment is at your own cost.
Dinner, bed and breakfast, is at the Otjombondona Kalahari Lodge.
